Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Review: Make or Break?

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, one of the latest phones from the Xiaomi brand, makes a good first impression. I had the chance to use the phone for a couple of days and I must say that it’s a stylish smartphone with a great display and overall good quality. Let’s jump right into a detailed review!

First, let’s talk design

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 has an attractive look, as there are two glass panels enclosing the body of the device. The back of the smartphone is made with glass – Gorilla glass 5, so you don’t really have to worry about protection but to avoid stories that touch, get a good phone case.

With a dimension of 6.27 x 2.96 x 0.32 in, the device has a plastic frame (although it looks metal-like) running in between the glass panels.

At this point, let me just say that this device can easily replace your dumbbells at home because it weighs a whopping 186g! Okay, maybe it wouldn’t replace your dumbbells 😑 but I think it’s really heavy…or is it just me?

At the back of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, we have a fast capacitive fingerprint scanner, dual rear camera and a flashlight. I noticed that the camera was protruding which was a little weird to me.

On the body of the device, there is the USB port and speaker at the bottom, power button and volume rocker on one side, and sim tray at the other side. Although the device did not come with an earpiece, there’s an earpiece jack at the top of the device.

Display

The screen is a 6.3 inch LCD with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, which is bright and sharp. The screen is not bezel-less – as the opposite is common with smartphones these days – which is not a bad thing, and the corners of the screen are rounded.

Speaking on the brightness of the device, the maximum brightness as seen outside is actually quite bright while the minimum brightness in a dark environment is relatively okay, except that I find myself increasing the brightness a bit.

A camera too good for its price

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 comes with a front camera of 13MP and a back camera of 48MP which takes really nice shots considering the price of the device (about N58,000). We compared its camera with those of high-end phones and honestly, I was impressed. Of course, there is a noticeable difference between pictures of the Redmi Note 7 and other high-end phones which to me is just the level of brightness (in terms of colour pop). But thinking of the price, the Xiaomi device does really well even if it’s not some professional camera ninja stunt going on here.

Memory and Performance

The Redmi Note 7 comes in different variants: A 3GB RAM model with 32GB internal storage, a 4GB RAM version with 64GB/128GB internal storage and a 6GB RAM one with 64GB internal storage; and all the models can be expanded to up to 256GB.

The device is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset clocked at up to 2.2GHz. Coupled with the 3GB/4GB/6GB RAM sizes, the device performs at a good speed.

And Battery Life

Battery life on this device is also quite impressive with a whopping 4000 mAh battery. With this, you could get about 35 hours on a single charge – provided you’re not a heavy user. As for the rate at which the phone charges, in my opinion, it’s not so fast. But then, I think the device already provides better features than other devices in its price range; so I can forgive the slow charge thing.

Final Words

My overall thought of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7: Beautiful device. Considering it’s a relatively mid-priced smartphone, I’ll say that it’s one of the best devices in its range. You can get the device here or at phone stores around you.

Let’s hear your thoughts, what do you think about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7?
