YouTube has announced new thresholds that will help more creators access monetization on the platform.
Announced on the Youtube blog, the Youtube Partners Program (YPP) eligibility criteria has been lowered to enable earlier access to the program and the fan funding features attached to it. The program will begin to accommodate Shorts creators and has added Shorts ad revenue sharing.
According to the information shared on the YouTube blog post, the YouTube Partners is now open to
- Creators with 500 subscribers
- 3 public uploads in the last 90 days
- Either 3000 watch hours in the last 1year or 3M shorts views in the last 90 days
Before now, YouTube content creators needed to have 1,000 subscribers, 4,000 watch hours, or 10 million Shorts views to monetize their content.
Speaking further on the monetization criteria expansion, Amjad Hanif, Youtube’s VP of creator products said; “As these creators continue to grow their channel, they’ll automatically become eligible to earn revenue sharing from ads and even more benefits once they reach the existing YPP eligibility criteria, without having to go through the full YPP application process again. These existing eligibility requirements to unlock revenue sharing remain unchanged.”
The fan funding features attached to the YPP includes
- Channel membership which allows viewers to join a channel through monthly payments and get members – only perks .
- Superchat/super stickers are used to connect fans with creators during a live streaming or premiere.
- Super thanks known before as viewer’s applause let’s creators earn revenue from viewers who want to show extra appreciation or special gratitude for the Shorts and long-form videos by buying a fun animation called superthanks
- Promote own products enables creators to connect their stores to YouTube and tag products from their stores to feature them in their contents.
Tagged products will be found in channel stores, or in a product shelf below the content, or via the shopping button on the content or as a pinned product in a livestream.
Also, the YouTube Shopping Affiliate program has also been expanded and is now available to all creators on the YPP who have over 200,000 subscribers.
This program allows creators to feature products from other brands and creators in their contents.
According to Hanif, Youtube has partnered with over 50 brands including beauty, tech, home, and apparel brands to be featured. He said; “We’ve partnered with over 50 brands (with more to come!) like Nordstrom, Sephora, Ulta Beauty, and Wayfair spanning beauty, tech, home and apparel whose products can be featured and tagged on videos and Shorts.”
The new YPP features will be rolling out in the US, UK, Canada, Taiwan and South Korea. The availability of these new features in other regions isn’t immediately known.
