Nigeria’s AI Vision, $140M Data Center Boost & ChatGPT’s Smart Update – TechCity Weekly

Equinix to Invest $140M in Southern Nigeria’s Internet Infrastructure

Global data infrastructure provider Equinix is investing $140 million over the next two years to expand connectivity across Southern Nigeria.

The plans include the launch of PR1, a data center in Port Harcourt, and expansion of LG3, Equinix’s third data center in Lagos. Notably, PR1 will serve as Nigeria’s first landing point for Meta’s 2Africa submarine cable, boosting bandwidth and reliability in regions beyond Lagos.

This investment is aimed at decentralizing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and supporting the country’s goal of 70% broadband penetration by 2025.

“The next time a cable fails, our goal is for customers not to notice,” said Wole Abu, Managing Director of Equinix West Africa.
